My back is killing me
Age related wear and tear on spinal discs can cause low back pain referred to as degenerative disc disease. Inter-vertebral disc are tough fibrous structures that absorb pressure and provide cushioning for the spinal column. Discs are flexible yet sturdy enough to facilitate movement.
Despite what the name suggests degenerative disc disease is not considered a disease nor does it worsen with time. Most cases consist of a low grade, continuous but tolerable back ache that will occasionally intensify for a few days or more. Pain will typically feel better or worse with certain movements or positions.
- Pain when sitting for prolonged periods often causes more severe back ache and stiffness when moving to a standing position which could have you hawling yourself out of the chair like the hunchback of notre dame.
- Pain can be relieved by walking around or changing positions which relieves the pressure on the disc.
Pain is typically caused by strain on the muscles supporting the spine and inflammation around the disc space. Both of these factors can easily be managed….. Don’t suffer in silence! Book and assessment with a Chartered Physiotherapist and take positive action to effectively manage your symptoms.
